DIKW – what is impact evidence based on?


I absolutely love these two videos beow, they are about data, information, knowledge and err … wisdom, or the “DIKW” hierarchy. This is a model for data and knowledge that grew up and became popular in the 1990s, but is still widespread and implicit in much of our knowledge work today. You will see it all around you – when people claim business, development or even personal knowledge is based on hard, objective data. Much development and impact evaluation discourse is based on DIKW – evidence based policy making, results based management, e-development, and many qualitative or quantitative methods.

DIKW is how we are encouraged to see our knowledge today, built on facts, stats, numbers – “evidence based” is the term. Good data is in this view the basis for all our knowledge. To prove impact, or to manage knowledge, or to deliver results to decision makers, one needs data…
